If you did not clear CA Inter in September 2026, you are not alone. Most candidates did not pass, even though the result was called a good one.
This plan shows you how to find what went wrong and how to restart for January 2027. It is based on CA Harsh Gupta’s guidance session held after the result.
Watch the Full Guidance Session
CA Harsh Gupta recorded this live session right after the result for students who did not clear. Watch it first, then use the steps below.
A Reality Check on the Result
ICAI declared the result on 22 October 2026, and the pass rates were better than recent sessions. Even so, most candidates did not clear.
| Category | Passed | Did not pass |
|---|---|---|
| Group I | 23.14% | About 77% |
| Group II | 18.92% | About 81% |
| Both groups | 13.21% | About 87% |
A course where a 15 to 20% pass rate counts as a good result is a hard course. So a setback does not mean you are not cut out for it. See our CA Inter September 2026 result analysis for the full numbers.
Give Yourself One Day
Feeling low, wanting to cry or avoiding calls is normal after a result you did not expect. That feeling is not your mistake, and it can push you to work harder.
Take today to feel it. Then start fresh tomorrow, with a clear plan for the January 2027 attempt.
Step 1: Find Where You Lost Marks
You cannot fix a gap you cannot see. Use these three checks in order.
Re-Read Your September 2026 Paper
Download the paper of the subject you did not clear and read it once. As you read, try to recall what you wrote for each question.
Compare With ICAI’s Suggested Answers
ICAI has released the suggested answers for all six Intermediate papers on its September 2026 suggested answers page. Read the answer for each question you attempted.
You will start spotting points you missed or got wrong. If your estimate of your own score now matches your marks, you have found most of the gap.
If Your Marks and Your Estimate Are Far Apart
Say you expected around 60 marks but scored 40 to 45. In that case, ask ICAI for your answer sheet details so you can see how it was marked.
ICAI offers verification of marks and certified copies of answer books through its portal at eservices.icai.org. This is not a re-evaluation of your answers. ICAI’s window for the September 2026 exams runs from 23 October 2026, 11:00 AM, to 21 November 2026, 11:59 PM, as per its notice. Check the fees on the portal before you apply.
Once you have your answer sheet, some students upload it with the matching ICAI suggested answers to an AI tool and ask it to list the gaps. Treat the output as a starting point and check it yourself.
Step 2: Work Out What Kind of Gap You Have
When you compare your answers, the gap will be one of two types. Each one needs a different fix.
| Type of gap | How it looks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Practice gap | You knew the topic and the section, but lost a mark or two in every question through weak writing or small analysis errors | Revise chapter by chapter and practise writing answers |
| Conceptual gap | After reading a question you cannot tell which topic or section it is based on | Fill the concepts first with a fast-track batch from a faculty you trust |
A Quick Self Test With Two Law Questions
Take the line “associated words draw their colour from each other”. If you immediately think of Interpretation of Statutes and the rule of Noscitur a Sociis, you have no conceptual gap there.
Now take a company whose accounts from four years ago were found to be fraudulent and must be corrected. If the rules on reopening of accounts under Section 130 of the Companies Act come to mind, your concept is working. If neither comes to mind, you have a conceptual gap.
Step 3: Choose Your Plan
If You Have a Conceptual Gap
Join a fast-track batch for that subject without delay, because there is no time for a regular batch now. This applies to every weak subject, not only Law.
Then give that batch your full focus for the next month. Leave marathons and revision videos until late November or December. If Law is your weak area, you can look at our CA Inter Law fast-track batch.
If You Have a Practice Gap
Go straight to revision with writing practice. A chapter-wise revision of the whole Law syllabus, from chapter 1 to chapter 15, with important questions and answer writing, suits this gap best.
For practice, use a chapter-wise test series so that you get feedback on where your answers fall short.
For Law, only one amendment applies to January 2027, which is in CSR. Read our CA Inter Law January 2027 amendments guide so you are fully updated.
Do Not Skip Taxation
If Taxation was weak, fix it fully this time. ICAI has said the Income-tax Act, 2025 will apply to CA exams from May 2027, so January 2027 is the last attempt on the old Act.
That makes it very important to clear Group I in January, since Taxation is in Group I. If you move this paper to a later attempt, you will have to study Direct Tax again from scratch.
One Group or Both Groups in January 2027
Group I is on 2, 4 and 6 January 2027, and Group II is on 8, 10 and 12 January 2027. This table gives a simple rule of thumb.
| Your situation | Suggested choice |
|---|---|
| You missed by a large margin, around 15% or more below the pass mark | Appear in Group I only |
| Classes of Group II are still pending | Appear in Group I only |
| You missed both groups by a small margin and have revised both | Both groups can work |
| Your score is stuck near the pass mark in one subject | Take a fresh approach to that subject, with a fast-track batch |
Group II is the harder one to add if you have not finished the classes. A strong single group is better than two weak ones.
Your Timeline From Now to January
You have about ten weeks before the first paper on 2 January 2027. Here is how to use them.
| When | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| This week | Find your gap with the paper and ICAI suggested answers |
| Until late November | Fix concepts with a fast-track batch, or start chapter-wise revision |
| 3 to 16 November | Fill the exam form. See our January 2027 exam form guide |
| 19 November to 14 December | Attempt ICAI mock tests. See the CA Inter January 2027 mock test schedule |
| December | Revision, marathons and timed writing practice |
| 2 January 2027 | Group I starts |
If Your Result Shows Withheld
If your result says it is withheld, do not panic. Contact ICAI through the Intermediate exam helpline at intermediate_examhelpline@icai.in and ask what the process is.
The helpline can tell you the steps that apply to your case, including any appeal.
Keep Your Mind in Your Own Lane
You will hear about others who scored more than they expected. Do not spend your energy comparing. What you control is your hard work, not the pass percentage.
If you have already given many attempts, pick one target attempt and decide that it is your last try at CA Inter. Many students also start another course alongside, such as ACCA, as a backup. That is a personal choice, and it can give you confidence while you continue with CA.
