CA Salary in India 2026 — What Do CAs Actually Earn? (Honest Numbers)
Not the inflated LinkedIn numbers. Not the pessimistic ones either. The real picture.
By Harsh Gupta | HG Virtuals
Ask five people what a CA earns and you will get five different answers.
“My cousin just qualified and got Rs. 25 LPA.” “My senior got only Rs. 6 LPA after 4 attempts.” “I saw someone on LinkedIn say Rs. 50 LPA as a fresher.” “CAs don’t earn that much anymore.”
All of these are true — for someone, somewhere, under specific circumstances. None of them tell you what YOU are likely to earn.
This blog gives you the real numbers — broken down by employer type, experience, city, and specialisation — so you can plan your career with accurate expectations.
The ICAI Campus Placement Benchmark
The most reliable data on CA fresher salaries comes from ICAI’s own campus placement programme.
The ICAI 62nd Campus Placement Programme placed newly qualified CAs with an average package of Rs. 12.88 LPA, with the highest domestic offer at Rs. 26.70 LPA from Power Finance Corporation.
But here is what that number means in context:
The headline packages go to AIR rank holders and exceptional first-attempt candidates with strong articleship at Big 4 or investment banking firms. For the remaining 95% of freshers, the realistic range is Rs. 6 to Rs. 14 LPA depending on employer type, city, and performance.
The Rs. 12.88 LPA average includes high outliers. A more realistic expectation for most freshers is Rs. 7 to Rs. 10 LPA — which is still excellent for a commerce professional at career start.
Fresher Salary by Employer Type
| Employer Type | Fresher Salary Range (2026) |
|---|---|
| Big 4 — Audit / Tax | Rs. 8.5 to Rs. 12 LPA |
| Big 4 — Advisory / Deals | Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 LPA |
| Mid-tier CA Firms | Rs. 4 to Rs. 8 LPA |
| MNC / Large Corporate | Rs. 7 to Rs. 12 LPA |
| PSU (Public Sector) | Rs. 12 to Rs. 18 LPA |
| Startup / SME | Rs. 5 to Rs. 9 LPA |
| Own Practice | Variable — depends on client base |
A few things to note from this table:
PSUs often pay more than Big 4 at the fresher level. PFC, ONGC, BPCL, and similar PSUs regularly offer Rs. 14 to Rs. 26 LPA packages at ICAI campus placements. The trade-off is that PSU roles tend to be less dynamic and growth can be slower.
Big 4 Advisory and Deals teams pay significantly more than Audit. If you can make a credible case for advisory during campus interviews — based on your articleship exposure and interests — target those teams specifically.
Mid-tier firms pay less at entry but give broader exposure. The salary gap narrows within 3 to 4 years as mid-tier professionals with diverse experience catch up.
How Salary Grows With Experience
This is where the CA qualification really pays off. The salary trajectory over a career is steep — far steeper than most commerce graduates.
| Experience Level | Approximate Salary Range |
|---|---|
| Fresher (0-1 year) | Rs. 6 to Rs. 14 LPA |
| 2 to 3 years | Rs. 12 to Rs. 22 LPA |
| 4 to 6 years | Rs. 18 to Rs. 35 LPA |
| 7 to 10 years | Rs. 30 to Rs. 60 LPA |
| Senior / Leadership (10+ years) | Rs. 50 LPA to Rs. 1 crore+ |
A CA fresher might start at Rs. 9 LPA — around Rs. 60,000 monthly in-hand — but by year 8 to 10, they are looking at Rs. 30 to 40 LPA as Senior Manager, or Rs. 50 to 80 LPA if they exit to investment banking or private equity.
The key insight here is that CA salary growth is back-loaded. The first 2 to 3 years may feel underwhelming compared to peers in other fields. But from year 4 onwards, the gap becomes very significant.
City-Wise Salary Difference
Location affects CA salaries more than most students realise.
| City | Premium Over Average |
|---|---|
| Mumbai | +20 to 25% |
| Bengaluru | +15 to 20% |
| Delhi NCR | +15 to 20% |
| Hyderabad / Pune | +5 to 10% |
| Chennai | Slightly below Mumbai / Delhi |
| Tier 2 cities | 20 to 30% below metro average |
A CA earning Rs. 10 LPA in Jaipur would likely earn Rs. 13 to 14 LPA in Mumbai for the same role. The cost of living difference partially offsets this, but the nominal salary gap is real.
Specialisation Makes the Biggest Difference
After 3 to 4 years of experience, what you specialise in matters more than where you started.
| Specialisation | Earning Potential (5-10 Years) |
|---|---|
| Direct Taxation / International Tax | Rs. 25 to Rs. 50 LPA |
| Statutory Audit (Big 4) | Rs. 20 to Rs. 40 LPA |
| Investment Banking / M&A | Rs. 40 to Rs. 80 LPA |
| Financial Reporting / IND AS | Rs. 22 to Rs. 45 LPA |
| Risk Advisory / Internal Audit | Rs. 20 to Rs. 35 LPA |
| CFO / Finance Leadership | Rs. 40 LPA to Rs. 1 crore+ |
| Independent Practice | Unlimited — depends on client base |
Investment banking and M&A advisory are the highest-paying paths — but they are also the most competitive to enter and require specific skills beyond the CA qualification.
Independent practice has no ceiling. A CA who builds a strong client base in GST advisory, tax litigation, or audit in a specific industry can earn far more than a salaried professional — but it takes years of client building and business development.
What Actually Determines Your Salary
The CA qualification opens the door. These factors determine how far you walk through it.
1. First attempt vs multiple attempts First-attempt CAs typically receive 15 to 20% higher packages at MNCs compared to candidates who took multiple attempts. This is not universally true — but it is a real factor in competitive hiring.
2. Quality of articleship A candidate with Big 4 articleship experience applying for a corporate role has a visible advantage over someone with small firm experience — even if both hold the same qualification.
3. Communication skills This is consistently cited by Big 4 and MNC recruiters as a differentiator. Two CAs with identical technical knowledge — the one who communicates clearly, confidently, and professionally will get the better offer. Every time.
4. Specialisation depth A CA who has spent 3 years doing nothing but international taxation knows things that a generalist CA does not. Specialists command premium salaries in their domain.
5. Rank Rank holders can easily touch Rs. 25 LPA+ as starting salary, and may access premium roles like International Tax, Valuations, or Deals at Big 4 firms that are otherwise difficult to enter as a fresher.
The Monthly Salary Picture
Students often think in LPA but actually live on monthly salary. Here is the conversion:
| Annual Package | Approximate Monthly In-Hand |
|---|---|
| Rs. 7 LPA | Rs. 47,000 to Rs. 52,000 |
| Rs. 10 LPA | Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 72,000 |
| Rs. 14 LPA | Rs. 88,000 to Rs. 98,000 |
| Rs. 20 LPA | Rs. 1.25 to Rs. 1.35 lakh |
| Rs. 30 LPA | Rs. 1.8 to Rs. 2 lakh |
Note: In-hand is lower than CTC because of PF, professional tax, and other deductions. The difference between CTC and in-hand is typically 15 to 20%.
CA Salary vs Other Commerce Careers
Students often wonder how CA compares to MBA, CFA, or B.Com + corporate career.
| Qualification | Typical Fresher Salary | 10-Year Potential |
|---|---|---|
| CA (India) | Rs. 7 to Rs. 14 LPA | Rs. 30 to Rs. 80 LPA |
| MBA (IIM A/B/C) | Rs. 25 to Rs. 40 LPA | Rs. 60 to Rs. 1.5 crore+ |
| MBA (Tier 2/3) | Rs. 6 to Rs. 12 LPA | Rs. 20 to Rs. 45 LPA |
| CFA (Level 3) | Rs. 8 to Rs. 15 LPA | Rs. 30 to Rs. 70 LPA |
| B.Com Graduate | Rs. 3 to Rs. 6 LPA | Rs. 12 to Rs. 25 LPA |
IIM graduates start higher than CAs — but the IIM A/B/C admission probability is extremely low, and the course costs Rs. 20 to Rs. 25 lakh. CA costs a fraction of that and the long-term earning potential is comparable to all but the top MBA programs.
One Honest Reality Check
Here is something no one will tell you in a CA coaching class.
The Rs. 1 crore salary stories you see on LinkedIn are real — but they represent CAs who have been in the profession for 15 to 20 years, built extraordinary expertise, taken career risks, and made smart moves at each stage.
The Rs. 6 LPA stories are also real — and they represent CAs who qualified after multiple attempts, had limited articleship exposure, and entered a competitive job market without differentiating themselves.
Most freshly qualified CAs in 2026 land somewhere between Rs. 7 to Rs. 12 LPA. That is a strong start. With the right specialisation, consistent performance, and career decisions, Rs. 25 to Rs. 40 LPA within 7 to 8 years is entirely realistic.
CA is one of the best long-term financial decisions a commerce student can make — as long as you treat it as a career, not just a qualification.
