The Future of the CA Profession in the AI Era

ICAI held its convocation across 23 centres on September 12, 2026, formally inducting 8,964 newly qualified Chartered Accountants into the profession. It is a good moment to ask a question every current student eventually thinks about: what does this profession look like once AI is part of daily work?

The Convocation, in Brief

The ceremony was inaugurated in Delhi by Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, who described Chartered Accountants as custodians of trust and pointed to their role in India’s economic system.

ICAI President CA. Prasanna Kumar D and Vice President CA. Mangesh Kinare both spoke about continuous learning and professional excellence as new members took their oath. That theme, learning that does not stop at qualification, is exactly where AI enters the picture.

ICAI Is Not Waiting on AI, It Is Already Building for It

Rather than treating AI as a distant threat, ICAI has spent the past year building tools and training around it. CA GPT, available at ai.icai.org, is the Institute’s own AI assistant trained on ICAI material for members and students.

For students specifically, the Board of Studies runs AURA, a two day AI workshop open to Foundation, Intermediate, and Final students, covering practical prompting and the use of AI in accounting, taxation, and audit work.

At the member level, ICAI inaugurated an AI Innovation Summit in New Delhi that drew over 4,000 delegates, signed an agreement with the Indian AI company Sarvam AI, and launched an AI certificate course to help practising CAs build these skills formally rather than pick them up ad hoc.

What AI Actually Changes for a CA

The honest answer is that AI is fastest at the parts of the job that were already the least valuable use of a qualified professional’s time. Reconciling entries, drafting first pass documentation, and scanning large datasets for anomalies are all things AI tools do quickly today.

What AI is not doing is signing off on an audit opinion, representing a client before tax authorities, structuring a transaction, or taking responsibility when something goes wrong. Those require judgment, and judgment is built through the training a CA goes through, not replaced by a chatbot.

The practical shift is that a CA’s value moves higher up the chain, from producing numbers to interpreting and standing behind them. Firms are already expecting new members to be comfortable using AI tools well, not to compete against them.

What This Means If You Are Still a Student

Treat AI literacy as a normal part of your preparation, the same way you would treat Excel or a tax portal. Attending AURA if you get the chance, or simply using ChatGPT or Gemini to understand concepts faster, builds a habit you will need as a working professional either way.

Do not let AI replace the actual understanding you build while studying. Firms hire CAs for judgment under pressure, and that judgment still has to come from you, not from a tool you query during the exam, which you cannot do anyway.

If you want a broader view on whether the profession is still worth the years it takes, our piece on whether CA is still worth it in 2026 covers that question directly. And if AI-assisted study is something you want to explore now, our guide on how AI can help CA Foundation students is subject specific.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI replace Chartered Accountants?

No. AI is replacing repetitive, rule based tasks within the job, not the professional judgment, accountability, and client relationships that define what a CA actually does.

What is CA GPT?

CA GPT is ICAI’s own AI tool, built to answer questions using ICAI’s material rather than the open internet, available at ai.icai.org for members and students.

Should CA Foundation or Inter students learn AI tools now?

Yes, informally. You do not need a certification at this stage, but getting comfortable asking AI tools good questions while studying is a habit that carries directly into practice later.

How many new CAs joined the profession in this convocation?

8,964 newly qualified Chartered Accountants received their Certificates of Membership across 23 centres on September 12, 2026.
